Putting together different plants, whether in the ground or planters is part science and part art. The science has to do with whether they like the same growing conditions, sun or shade, cool or hot, wet or dry. The art is finding complimentary colors, shapes and textures.
When it comes to pots or planters or the ground, you’ll definitely want to look for a “thriller”, “filler” and “spiller.” Thrillers are the tall, focal point of the planter, something that catches your eye and makes you want to go “WOW.” Fillers are the middle height that do what they say, fill in the space and create the backdrop for the thriller. Spillers then cascade along the edge and down the planter (and are the major component for hanging baskets).
In the end it’s often personal preference of what you like, but we can offer some suggestions to help in choosing and putting them together. The combinations are limitless, but here are a few ideas of baskets & pots that you can put together with flowers, foliage, and vegetables.
